Top 10 Things to Think About When Marketing Your Start-Up

December 2, 2025 • By: Molly Morter

Marketing your start-up isn’t a checklist or a quick fix. It’s an invitation to bring your whole self into your work – and to connect with the people who need you most. If you’re ready to market your start-up in a way that feels authentic, soulful, and effective, here’s what I want you to hold close. These are the things I tell myself and my clients over and over – because without them, marketing can feel exhausting, overwhelming, or disconnected from what truly matters.

Start With Authentic Clarity

Get crystal clear on what you’re actually offering – and why it matters to you
Authenticity isn’t just about “being real,” it’s about knowing your purpose so deeply it shines through. When your marketing reflects your true intention, your people will recognize it immediately.

Your Story Is Your Superpower

I can’t stress this enough: your story is everything. Not the “I started in my garage” cliché – but the real, messy, beautiful reasons you’re building this business. When you share your why – your struggles, your wins, your beliefs – you create connection. You create trust. And trust is the foundation for any business.

Show Up as Yourself – Fully

There’s no marketing formula that can replace you. Especially as a founder, your brand lives in your personality, your values, your voice. Don’t try to be someone you’re not. Your tribe wants you, not a version of you that feels like a performance.

Speak Like You’re Talking to a Friend

Forget corporate jargon or “marketing speak.” Write and talk like you actually do, with warmth, clarity, and kindness. Your audience is real people. They want to hear your human voice, not buzzwords or sales scripts.

Consistent not Perfect

Marketing isn’t about being flawless. It’s about showing up enough to build a relationship.
Pick a rhythm that feels doable and sustainable for you – and keep it going. Small, consistent actions build trust over time.Trust the process. The magic is in the momentum.

Serve First, Sell Second

Marketing doesn’t have to feel like a pushy sales pitch. Approach it as service – sharing knowledge, solving problems, inspiring your audience. When you focus on giving real value, sales happen naturally.

Your Brand is an Experience – Not Just a Look

Branding isn’t just your logo or colors – it’s how people feel when they interact with you.
From your website to your emails to your social media posts – each touchpoint should reflect the energy and values of your business. Ask yourself: What emotions do I want my brand to evoke? Calm? Confidence? Joy?

Speak to Your People…Not Everyone

It’s tempting to try to please everyone, but your business will thrive when you focus on your tribe. Who needs you most? What do they care about? What language do they use?
Get hyper-specific. When you speak directly to your ideal audience, your message lands deeper and wider.

Get Comfortable Being Seen

Marketing requires visibility – and visibility requires vulnerability. I won’t lie: it can feel scary to put yourself out there. But hiding won’t grow your business. Your voice, your perspective, your passion – they’re all needed.

Make Marketing a Joyful Expression of Your Vision

Marketing doesn’t have to be a grind. It can be creative, playful, and deeply fulfilling – if you let it. Experiment. Tell stories that excite you. Show the quirks and the heart behind your business.

When you market from a place of joy and alignment, people feel it—and they want to join you.

  • Marketing your start-up is about more than sales or strategy.
  • It’s about showing up fully – honoring your story, your voice, your values.
  • It’s about building relationships, not just transactions.
  • It’s about leading with heart, and trusting that your people are out there, waiting for you.
  • If you can do that, you’re not just marketing a business—you’re creating a movement.
  • And that? That’s how you build something that lasts.
